As Gek Quasar walked around the city, he thought how different the Earth of the past was. He had been briefed before he left that an unauthorized time travel device had been detected travelling from the thirty-first century to three thousand years in the past, it was the first time this had ever happened.
When Gek joined the Earth And Space Administration he was excited to travel through time. Officially the time travel division does not exist and it is imperative that time travel remains a secret. Gek had never told anyone what he does, if people knew of time travel and travelled through time, the results would be catastrophic.
Time travel was something Gek had thought about since he was a child. Every time travel operative's sole mission is to protect time and make sure it is never altered. The past or the future has never changed but if it did, the E.A.S.A. would do everything needed, no matter the cost to find a way to return it to its intended path.
In the thirty-first century a group of reactionaries is gaining popularity and the E.A.S.A. is concerned how far this group will go to achieve its goals. Gek has never known a time where there wasn't peace. All the problems of centuries ago are gone but there are some who yearn for the past.
When Gek joined the E.A.S.A. he met a cadet named Carrew Loiden and they quickly became friends. They found they had similar interests and agreed on many subjects until Carrew met a prominent politician named Brel Varrlet. Brel Varrlet poisoned Carrew’s mind with his extreme views and opinions. Brel Varrlet and Carrew Loiden were the only people Glek could think of who could organize unauthorized time travel.
Brel Varrlet was always trying to wield his power. He never understood the damage his influence had and he didn't care. Brel Varrlet only cared about what benefited him. He told Carrew that significant historical events of the past were pure fiction and never happened. Several times in Earth’s history devastating events have affected millions, Brel denied that any of these events had ever happened. Even though it is known that the floods caused by climate change in the twenty fourth century changed the landscape of planet earth, Brel Varrlet refused to acknowledge it had happened.
He was an advocate of oil well drilling which has been illegal for six hundred years and claimed vehicles that ran on clean energy are poisoning the environment just as much as vehicles that ran on gasoline or diesel in the past. He often talked of bringing back fossil fuels to replace clean energy, knowing the money it would generate for people like himself, but he was always dismissed. The public had access to a history that hadn’t been altered and knew of the consequences. The only way Brel Karrlet could have the future he yearned for was to change the past. A time machine had been stolen and it was suspected that Carrew was the thief.
Gek had noticed two men were following him. In his pocket he had a small device with a red button on the top. When he pressed the red button he disappeared. Invisibility is a useful tool but also a dangerous activity only to be used in an emergency. The chemical reaction it produces increases senescent cells which make the body age. Careful use for a short time will not create any long term effects. As the two men walk past Gek's invisible form he begins to follow them.
“We’ve lost him. He must have used an invisibility tool.”
“How can we have lost him, he doesn’t know we’re following him, he must have spotted us, I told you not to get too close.”
“Carrew is going to be upset that we lost him. You go that way and I’ll go this way. We’ll meet back here later.”
Gek watched as the two men walked in opposite directions. As soon as they were out of sight he pressed the red button and was visible again.
“So Carrew is here,” he thought.
Gek watched as the past revolved around him. He watched people staring down into their cellphones, unaware of what the future will be. All of these people will be dead before Earth finally knows the peace he does. He didn’t know where to start, the city was almost eighty four square miles.
As he walked down a busy street, as if it was planned, he saw Carrew walking towards him. Their eyes locked and Gek knew he was trying to change the past for a reason that would only benefit himself and Brel Varrlet. As Gek faced Carrew he thought how old he looked. The side effects of invisibility had ravaged his youth. His hair, once jet black was now grey and his face was an aggressive scowl.
“Hello Carrew, what are you doing here?”
“Enjoying the past Gek. How about you?”
“You know why I am here, so I ask you again. What are you doing here?”
“You have no jurisdiction over me at this time.” Carew replied.
Gek became angry. “Why do you want to change everything? You know of the past, you know what it was like. Right now in this time, there is so much suffering and the future is bleak for so many years to come. Why do you want that in our time?”
An explosion startled Gek, he looked at Carrew who smiled and said “History is a lie Gek.”
A building had just exploded. The dust was rising rapidly into the sky and the building’s materials were crashing to the street below. People were panicking and Carrew had disappeared. He felt his time dimensional radio vibrating in his pocket, the E.A.S.A. was calling him back to the thirty first century. Something had changed.
